About

Books on Asia is your guide to finding quality books on Japan and Asia. By offering thought-provoking content in the form of book excerpts, reviews, literary criticism, author interviews and a podcast, we hope to create an intelligent space for people to explore issues on Asia in-depth. We are a book recommendation site and we may make affiliate referral fees through the following online bookstores: Apple Books, Bookshop (U.S.) and Amazon. We recommend only books of the highest quality. We are a reader-based site, concerned with the wants and needs of those seeking to learn about Asia.

We present a variety of books—from new releases to enduring classics—that we feel deserve to be read, discovered and discussed.

Note: At the moment, BOA is not accepting submissions for book reviews, excerpts, essays or interviews (including “First Book”) as we are focusing on expanding the Books on Asia Podcast. Subscribe to the BOA Podcast.

Submissions

Book Reviews

For those submitting books (including translations) for review, our priorities are: upcoming book releases, recent releases, classics, and “hidden gems,” in that order. We do not have a “no bad reviews” policy like many publications do. However, rather than write a bad review, we will turn down books we feel do not fit our site. Please Note: We no longer accept memoir submissions for review (unless you’re famous), the reason being that we get so many “my year in Japan,” “my life abroad,” and lately, “my experience with the Tohoku Earthquake” submissions that we’d risk becoming a memoir-only site. If it’s your first book, and it is a memoir, try submitting to our “First Book” column.

First Book

If you’re a first-time author, please submit to our column called “First Book” in which we give you a chance, through a series of interview-style questions, to tell readers why you wrote your book, why the world needs it, and most importantly, why they should read it.

Books on Asia Podcast

For those hoping to appear on the Books on Asia podcast, (subscribe) sponsored by Stone Bridge Press, please understand that podcast episodes will likely appear three months after the date you request. For example, as of the first of April, our next open slot for a podcast guest is the beginning of July.

Excerpts

The fastest way to get publicity for your book on our site is by allowing us to run an excerpt under “New Writing.” Please choose your best writing for the excerpt. (Fact: Books with excerpts sell more copies from our site than those with reviews only).

Essays/Short Stories

We also accept essays (literary criticism included) and short stories under the categories of “Articles” and “New Writing” respectively.

Author/Translator Interviews

We also accept interviews of known authors/translators, and those who are up-and-coming. We occasionally do interviews ourselves.
